Identifying work health and safety hazards and managing risk is a key way to prevent and reduce the likelihood of injuries. See it, assess it, control it.

What is hazard awareness?

Hazard awareness is being aware of the hazards in our environment which could cause us or others harm.
A hazard is a source of potential harm to a person or the environment we operate in.

Step 1 – See It

Before starting work or setting out on the road look for and think about potential sources of harm. Use the hazard wheel to help you identify the types of hazards which you may come across.

What is risk management?

Risk management is assessing the likelihood and consequence of the hazard causing harm and then controlling the hazard to reduce that risk. When a hazard is assessed it is typically given a score or rating to help you rank the risks from highest to lowest.

Step 2 – Assess It
Using a risk matrix or table
a) decide what the consequence would be if the hazard caused harm.
b) decide what the likelihood is of the hazard causing harm

The higher the score, the higher the risk.

Step 3 – Control It
