In the lead up to the Australian Training Awards on 19 November, MEGT is celebrating the achievements of all our apprentices and trainees who have won state-level awards and who will be competing for a national title this week. Today we celebrate the winner of the state-level Australian School-Based Apprentice of the Year Award for WA:
Thalia Wilkinson
Qualification: Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
Employer: Collins Electrical
School: Swan Valley Anglican Community School
Thalia Wilkinson knew while she was still completing secondary school that she wanted to become an electrician and decided she was ready to start working towards her goal sooner than most. With the help and support of her school, Swan Valley Anglican Community School, she enrolled in an Australian School-based Apprenticeship at Collins Electrical.
“Originally I was really interested in the area and was actually considering pursuing a university degree in the subject and my mother was the one who suggested I do an apprenticeship,” Thalia explains when asked how she entered the industry.
Keen to finish school but also want to start working towards your career goals?
A School-Based Apprenticeship might be just the answer!
Thalia enjoys the combination of practical work, theory and work placements that she has been able to experience during her apprenticeship and believes that undertaking an Australian School-Based Apprenticeship has also improved her communication skills. She is currently using these skills to promote apprenticeships amongst her community and peers and is passionate about continuing to do so.
Thalia plans to continue her studies and complete a Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety at the same time as she completes her apprenticeship training in the hopes of becoming an OHS Worker. She also wishes to complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to enable her to someday teach other apprentices.
We wish Thalia all the best for this week’s national awards!
