Tasmanian tradies who have been unable to finish their building and construction apprenticeship because of a lack of work may be given a chance to get back out on site thanks to the Tasmanian State Government’s Out of Trade Register.
The Out-of-Trade Register has been created by Skills Tasmania to connect apprentices and trainees looking for work, with employers looking to hire an apprentice or trainee for their business.
Apprentices will soon be contacted by mail and asked to register and contact the Tasmanian Building and Construction Industry Training Board (TBCITB) if they want to resume their trade training. This information will then be shared with potential employers to connect apprentices with available jobs.
In 2013- 2014, almost 200 Tasmanian building and construction apprentices started their apprenticeship but did not complete because of a lack of work. As commercial building opportunities increase in Launceston and Hobart, the new Out of Trade Register will give these apprentices a chance to qualify.
Some of the major projects due to start soon include the silos development in Launceston, the Living City project in Devonport and the Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment.
