Cummins South Pacific is proud to be celebrating the recent success of two of their MEGT apprentices at the Regional WorldSkills Competition held in Wollongong, NSW.

Louise Azzopardi, a 4th-year apprentice from the Cummins Wetherill Park branch was awarded silver at the ceremony on 15 November, following her performance at the October 16 competition. Louise’s medal brings Cummins’ WorldSkills tally to four regional medals and one national medal over the last four WorldSkills competitions.

Currently completing a Certificate IV in Heavy Commercial Automotive Mechanical Technology Louise hopes to later undertake an automotive electrical course to further her qualifications, skills and knowledge. Louise has previously won two awards at TAFE and has inspired women considering entering a trade through her Women in Auto Trades video.

Justin Walker, a Certificate III Automotive Mechanical Technology apprentice, also from the Wetherill Park branch, came 4th in the competition.

The competition was tough however Louise and Justin showed great confidence in their approach. Organisers and judges were very impressed when both apprentices completed a Job Safety Analysis for each of the six projects and had the judges sign and approve these prior to starting any of the tasks. This unique approach to safety set them apart from their competitors on the day.

The next step for Louise will now be to compete at the National WorldSkills Competition in August next year. If she wins gold at national level, she will have the opportunity to compete at the international competition in Abu Dhabi in 2017.

Congratulations Louise and Justin and we wish Louise and Cummins the best of luck for nationals!
