Monique Cooper is currently completing Year 11 at St. Anthony’s Catholic College in Toowoomba, Queensland and preparing to graduate from secondary school in 2016. She has also just commenced her Certificate III in Hairdressing, giving her future career goals a head start before she has even finished school.

Monique’s journey started when she completed work experience at Just Teezing Hair Studio, run by business owner Megan Evans. It wasn’t long before Megan could see Monique’s passion for hairdressing and her willingness to learn and decided to register her as an Australian School-Based Apprentice with MEGT.

Now Monique is undertaking her Certificate III in Hairdressing and continues to work part-time for Megan while she completes Year 11. With the full support of her school, parents, employer, and MEGT, she will go on to complete Year 12 in 2016 whilst gaining valuable workplace experience and obtaining a nationally recognised Hairdressing qualification.

Inspired by Monique’s story but not sure how to get started or what industry you are interested in?

Follow our tips below to give your career a head start:

Discover your career path
Have a think about what you are good at or what interests you – even ask family and friends to tell you what they think would suit you. Sometimes other people know us better than we know ourselves!

Find a job to suit your goals
Talk to your school careers adviser about the career options that are available in the area that interests you and to help you find a potential employer.

Look at job ads to see what skills are needed for different jobs. The MEGT jobs board is a great place to start. You can also register on our jobs board to receive alerts for jobs in your chosen areas.

Get started!
Your new employer or careers adviser can contact your local MEGT consultant who will register the Training Contract for you so you can get your apprenticeship underway!
